will an air conditioner ruin my window sill?
I would like to buy a window air conditioning unit, but my windows are newly framed in a nice wood with vinly storm windows set in. So, the wood will is not even and flat. The vinyl inset sticks up in the center. Hard to explain . . . I've never owned an air conditioner before, so I am worried that I will rough up this new wood window frame or crunch the vinyl edge. Does anyone have instructions on how to install? Does replacing just a few windows look bad?
Since it's so expensive to replace windows, I got a quote for replacing just 5 of the draftiest windows in our house, which would cost about $3,000. They seem like high-quality windows but I'm a little worried about whether or not they will match, since the current windows are wood and have a blue exterior trim, while the new ones are vinyl and white, although they said they would cap the outside wood trim in aluminum of the same blue color (which matches ok, though it's a tad darker). I have no idea when we would replace the rest of the windows. It would probably be years from now. I also really like the look of the wood windows, but this company only sells vinyl. Does anyone have any experience matching new vinyl with old wood windows, especially since some of each are on the front of the house? Or should we just save up and replace them all at once? Our heating bill is not that much of a problem, by the way, though I'm sure we'd save a few bucks. I would just feel horrible spending that much money and then not liking them. ugh. We're just trying to take advantage of the tax credit if possible, plus the windows are about 60 years old.

How to get rid of dog scratches on wood windows and paneling?

Where can I find this metal piece to complete my woodworking project of making curtain rod brackets?

What's the best way to repair dry-rot on exterior wood window sills?
I have an 60 year old home in the Arizona desert that has steel sash windows that I wish to keep, however, the exterior portion of the windows have wooden sills. I recently found some dry rot in some of these sills and have been thinking to use a Custom Building Product called "Fix-All" to patch and sand/ reshape the damaged portions. A fellow at Home Depot's paint department also told me they stock a product that will stop the spread of the dry rot. Has anyone any experience using Fix-All on exterior applications? I read the PDF and it said it should not be used unless in exterior applications unless a waterproof coating is applied over the patch. I suppose I could use an elastomeric paint which paint film will not break, but it has to be applied so thick, the repair might look unsightly. The long and short of it is I really don't want to be prying the entire sills out and replacing them, for I am not a carpenter and am not sure what I will get into if I tried to remove the sills.
